In June of 2012 Bioflyer Productions became the first local theater to mount the award winning rock musical SPRING AWAKENING! The show took place two weekends at the Asheville Masonic Temple. Winner of 8 TONY Awards, including BEST MUSICAL the groundbreaking show celebrates an unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with power, poignancy, and passion.

Our Asheville based company is well known for producing cutting edge theater on a professional level yet only using local performers who volunteer their talent to help raise funds for charity. The exciting score of this famous rock musical featured Chuck Taft as returning Music Director. This year’s production also benefited Planned Parenthood, one of the area’s most powerful community outreach organizations for young people and family education.

SPRING AWAKENING takes its inspiration from one of literature’s most controversial masterpieces–a work so daring in its depiction of teenage self-discovery, it was banned from the stage and not performed in its complete form in English for nearly 100 years. This was not because of its bold depiction of rebellious youth, but rather the perceived evils of a sexually repressive and socially rigid society. On Broadway, the show became famous because it did not look like a regular musical, and it did not sound like a regular musical. It was truly fresh, innovative, and a magnet for younger theater goers.

“Saw the show last weekend and loved it. If you like musical theater that cuts to the core, this is it” –Steve Turner

It was unbelievable – an amateur cast performing a difficult show with such skill.
AND it benefited Planned Parenthood…I have thought about this since leaving the Masonic Temple, and yes, I think it is the best show other than Angels In America (all versions, both Acts) that I have seen in Asheville. –Peggy Heilig

Saw this play last weekend, IT WAS AMAZING!!! such a talented group of performers!
I was really moved by the music, the wonderful vocals, the message, and the obvious passion of everyone involved–quality performances and prodution! –Cynde Allen

Thank you so much for being bold enough to bring Spring Awakening to Asheville. Also, loved your reference about the play and PP both having to deal with tough issues. –Bonnie M. Smith, Planned Parenthood Health Systems

Rock…your work is so inspiring! Thanks for all you do and have done for the community of Asheville. –Kelly Buchanan
